The annual Study Island Incentive Program has begun at Etna Elementary with our Study Island Party planned for May for any student who earns 70 blue ribbons.

All teachers will set students levels of mastery differentiating based on their individual strengths and weaknesses soon. Students will work on Study Island in centers and in the computer lab for a small time at school but mostly they earn these ribbons by working on the program outside of school. All students in grades 3 through 5 have their own personel password and can be using their personal membership at http://www.studyisland.com/ to start practicing now.

Anti-Bullying Week
At Etna we take bullying very seriously. Students have learned how to handle a bullying situation by using our Stop, Walk, and Talk program.

December 5 through December 9thwe held an Anti-Bullying week. Rick Rieser  kicked  it off by presenting to our students the message of tolerance and celebrating differences. Heread from his book Percy: The Perfectly Imperfect Chicken.

Throughout the week, our focus was on how to be a good friend and citizen. Students learned what it means to be a bystander to bullying and how they should handle themselves if they see bullying taking place. Students also learned how to lift someone up by writing positive affirmations to one another.

Finally, students signed the following pledge: This is for me, my friends today, and my friends tomorrow. I think being mean stinks! I won’t watch someone get picked on because I am a do something person, not a do nothing person. I care, I can help change things, and I can be a leader. In my world there are no bullies allowed. Bullying is bad… Bullying bites… Bullying bothers me. I know sticking up for someone is the right thing to do!

For the remainder of this school, students will be encouraged to use their Stop, Walk And Talk technique whether they are a victim or a by stander.  Alleged bullies will be questioned and given age appropriate consequences per the Code of Conduct. Bullying can also be reported to any adult staff member verbally or in writing.  There is a Bully Box in the office for students to use as another avenue to report.  A bully report form is located on this website also.

Please do your part to help make Etna Elementary a safe environment where all students can learn.

BFF

This year we are continuing the program called BFF (Basic Fact Friends) to help us meet the goal th

The purpose ofBFF - Basic Fact Friendsis to provide a school-wide program which supports students’ efforts to learn thebasic math addition and multiplication facts and to make these facts automatic (Automaticity is knowing the answer to the fact within 3 seconds.)

BFF - Basic Fact Friends reviews, over the school year, the facts in a systematic way so that students experience each of the 36 addition and 36 multiplication facts in a different way to supplement their classroom experiences. Students who master the facts in a 2 minute drill will be celebrated on our BFF Masters bulletin board and be rewarded an incentive.

The entire school, both students and staff, as well as volunteers are working together to help all students reach this honor. Current BFFs being practiced each week are on the newsletter calendars. Please reinforce these skills at home. Again, together we can make a difference!
