Letter to Parents,
On September 26th, we will have our first “School Safety Day”, which will focus on steps students and staff can take to keep our school safe. A district focus is on student safety and taking proactive measures to keep everyone safe, and this is a vital component of that focus. Last year, our district partnered with the Licking County Sheriff’s Office and the West Licking Fire Department to train administration, teachers, and classified staff in A.L.I.C.E. training. After a very positive response from staff, an open community meeting was held where community members were supportive of taking additional steps involving students in the training. This day is simply the logical progression of our evolving focus on school safety.
This will be a normal day of school. Attendance will be taken as normal. The morning will consist of many of the same activities which our staff took part in: Learning about A.L.I.C.E., learning about emergency medicine, practicing barricading in place, and additionally watching some videos regarding bullying and some conversations about bullying. The afternoon will be spent in a simulated drill, in conjunction with law enforcement and the fire department. The drill will involve simulated gunfire (conducted by law enforcement) and we will select certain students to be victims. All students will be evacuated from the building by the end of the drill. At the end of the day, students will return to the building and will undergo a quick “debriefing” in the gym with myself and the emergency responders.
While I truly believe in the importance of this day, if you should choose to pick your student up before the afternoon session, we will not mark it as an unexcused absence. However, in our current society, I truly believe it is necessary to take these steps in order to better prepare our students. It is the sincere hope that we will never have to implement any of this training. Being in the Boy Scouts, we were taught to “Be Prepared”. This will hopefully assist us in keeping our school safe.
I will hold an informational meeting on this at 6:00-6:30 P.M. on Tuesday, September 23rd in the high school library. If you have more questions or want to hear more details, I would love to see you then. You are also more than welcome to email me specific questions at email@example.com.
Proud to be your Principal,
